FESI’s flagship 18th International Engineering Structural Integrity Assessment Conference (ESIA18) will be held in conjunction with China Structural Integrity Consortium’s 2026 International Symposium on Structural Integrity (ISSI2026) between May 18–20, 2026 at the Technology and Innovation Centre (TIC), University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, UK.

The conference is to be chaired by Ali Mehmanparast, Professor of Structural Integrity at the University of Strathclyde.

ESIA18–ISSI2026 will provide a unique opportunity for the engineering structural integrity (ESI) community to learn about novel solutions and technical advances to some of the most urgent challenges facing engineering today, and to network with leaders in ESI from around the world.

Held over three days, there will be time for follow-up discussions, friendly debate, and the exchange of views and information. Presentations and posters will address various technical themes.

The conference flyer is available to download via this link.

Call for abstracts

Delegates are encouraged to make a technical presentation at the conference or submit a poster for the poster session during the conference.

For those wanting to make a technical presentation or submit a poster, please download our Abstract Template, complete the information on the template and upload to the Conference Abstract Database.

When submitting the completed template please fill out all fields: Name with Title (ie, Dr/Professor, etc), Email, Affiliation (ie, company or university), Abstract (presentation/poster) Title and the Chosen Session that it is intended for.

Abstract Templates should be submitted as soon as possible and by February 28, 2026 at the latest.

Please register for the conference and pay the relevant fees within 31 days of receiving an email message confirming acceptance of your presentation/poster. Presentation material should be via PowerPoint and generally be planned on being 15 minutes long (plus 5 minutes for questions/discussion). The format and style of the PowerPoint presentations should be of the choosing of individual presenters.

Awards

There are three competitive awards on offer at ESIA18–ISSI2026:

  • two Rod Smith awards for Best Posters
  • two Peter Flewitt awards for Best Early Career Presentations
  • two Keith Miller awards for Best Overall Presentations

Free registration for selected early career researchers

We are pleased to announce that a limited number of free registration places are available for a few selected early career researchers (ie, final year PhDs, post-docs and early career academics). To be considered for this opportunity, applicants are required to submit a supporting statement of no more than 300 words, detailing their interest in the conference and how their participation aligns with their academic or professional goals. Please send your supporting statement to the Conference Chair at ali.mehmanparast@strath.ac.uk no later than January 31, 2026.

We encourage eligible candidates to apply promptly, as these places are offered on a competitive basis.

Discount for members

FESI warmly invites members and colleagues of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, the Engineering Integrity Society, the European Structural Integrity Society, and China Structural Integrity Consortium to ESIA18–ISSI2026. Members of these organisations members will pay the same 20% discounted fees as for FESI members.

For delegates registering from China, please download this document and pay via Stripe.

Special Issue in Engineering Failure Analysis

We are pleased to announce that a Special Issue of the journal Engineering Failure Analysis (Impact Factor=5.7) has been dedicated to a selected number of outstanding papers from the conference. Submissions to this Special Issue will be by invitation only shortly after the conference to authors whose presentations demonstrate exceptional quality and originality.

Baillie Hanif Raja

Profile

To coincide with the ESIA18–ISSI2026 Conference, we have organised the following evening events.

1. An early evening Civic Reception hosted by Bailie Hanif Raja, representative of Jacquelin McLaren, Rt Hon The Lord Provost of Glasgow, at 19:00 on Monday, May 18 at the Glasgow City Chambers, 82 George Square, Glasgow G2 1DU.

2. An evening Gala Dinner at 19:00 on Tuesday, May 19 at The Barony, University of Strathclyde, Rottenrow, Glasgow G4 0RA.

We are delighted that Commander Michael Forrester MBE, Staff Marine Engineer Officer (SSN) to Commander Submarine Flotilla will be the After Dinner Speaker at this years conference.

Michael joined the Royal Navy in 2006 from the University of Strathclyde where he read Meng in Mechanical and Materials Engineering. Mike is an accomplished submariner and his most recent onboard role being the head engineer with responsibility for the nuclear reactor, all propulsion and life support systems. Subsequently, he moved to his current role as the head marine engineer for the attack submarine flotilla.

In 2023–2024, Mike was part of the winning team for the World’s Toughest Row—a gruelling 3,000-mile unaided rowing race across the Atlantic for the Royal Navy as part of the HMS Oardacious 2023 team. HMS Oardacious is the charitable organisation for the Royal Navy, rowing oceans and raising money to champion mental health and resilience. The winning rowing boat itself was named Captain Jim in honour of Captain Jim Simpson who unfortunately took his own life in 2020.

Our after-dinner speaker will talk about the positive steps on the team’s winning journey and the important focus placed on mental health and resilience which impacts us all as we strive towards everyday high performance.
