This is Engineering Day

This is Engineering Day will return for its third year on Wednesday November 3, 2021.

The day is a nationwide initiative dedicated to challenging narrow public perceptions of the profession by raising awareness of the breadth of engineering and celebrating the contribution engineers make to the world around us. Last year, with support from high profile brands and individuals including Google, Facebook, Amazon, TfL, McCain, Mercedes, and Lewis Hamilton we reached a potential 62 million people on social media with messages about engineering’s impact.

This year, to align with the UN Climate Change Conference (COP26) we will be showcasing how engineers are creating a sustainable future. Some of the biggest challenges we face stem from how we interact with the environment, and engineering is at the heart of finding solutions to shape a better future.

What’s happening this year?

Looking ahead to 2050, how will engineers have shaped our world? How is engineering helping us to live more sustainably in the future? These are the questions we will be answering on This is Engineering Day 2021.

We will be stimulating conversation by sharing images of what our world could look like in 2050.  On the day, we will unveil, on digital and social media, reimagined classic artworks that incorporate future engineering technologies. These reimagined masterpieces will be exhibited in Glasgow, the host city for COP26.

Ways to support us on the day

We would love your help in making This is Engineering Day 2021 as far-reaching as possible. A toolkit of information about the day and detail on ways you can get involved is available online here but in summary the simplest ways to support on November 3 are to:

  1. Use our toolkit assets on social media using #ThisisEngineeringDay and @ThisisEng to help get engineering trending on the day. We will share the toolkit with you next month.
  2. Share your own vision of what a 2050 net zero future shaped by engineering looks like on social media, using #ThisisEngineeringDay and @ThisisEng.
  3. Promote your engineers/engineering net zero case studies on public-facing channels to showcase their contributions to a net zero future [include if relevant].
  4. Engage your members or staff via newsletters, blogs, or your organisation’s intranet to encourage them to take part and join in the #ThisisEngineeringDay conversation.
  5. Attend our Green Skills webinar on the day, as part of the Royal Academy’s COP26 “Ask the Engineers” series. You can register to attend here.

Please do get in touch via contact@thisisengineering.org.uk if you would like to talk about your plans to support, so that we can share and amplify on social media, and if you aren’t already, follow This is Engineering on Instagram, Twitter, YouTube and Facebook.
