Workshop
Structural Integrity Challenges in Decommissioning
Birchwood Conference Centre, Warrington, UK
May 19, 2016
As an asset reaches the end of its operational life significant engineering challenges remain. The responsibility of any structural integrity engineer is to ensure that these assets are decommissioned safely, despite the structure being subject to loads and degradation mechanisms that may not have been previously considered. The challenges are further complicated when decommissioning nuclear assets due to the presence of hazardous materials which restrict normal working practices.
With 17 nuclear facilities at various stages of decommissioning, and a £3.2b annual budget to undertake this work, the UK has developed world leading expertise. This workshop will provide a forum for recognised experts in structural integrity and decommissioning across a range of sectors to present their expertise and to share up to date understanding relating to the safe decommissioning of some of the UK’s most important assets. Keynote speeches will be presented during the morning sessions. Afternoon sessions will cover radioactive waste container structural integrity and fitness‐for‐purpose solutions for structural integrity in decommissioning.
The workshop will be chaired by Peter Frost of Frazer-Nash Consultancy Ltd.
