The Wind & Marine Energy Systems & Structures (WAMSS) is an EPSRC-funded Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT), led by the University of Strathclyde, working collaboratively with Universities of Oxford and Edinburgh. The Centre aims to train the next generation of technical leaders, through EngD and PhD graduates, for the Offshore Renewable Energy (ORE) sector.
There are currently 5 PhD/EngD studentships available at the University of Strathclyde in the area of offshore renewable energy structures for the next intake of the WAMSS Programme in October 2022 supervised by Professors Brennan, Collu, Kolios and Mehmanparast at the department of Naval Architecture, Ocean & Marine Engineering. These positions are suitable for high calibre candidates with a strong background in Marine/Mechanical/Civil/Materials/Structural Engineering or Naval Architecture.
The studentships are available within the following research themes and topics:
Offshore structures and structural integrity
- Offshore wind to hydrogen: structural integrity considerations
- Corrosion and Fatigue in the marine environment
- Life-extension and re-powering of aged Offshore Wind Turbine structures
- Novel manufacturing and materials for offshore wind and marine renewable energy
- Accelerated testing methodologies for long-term structural integrity assessment
Marine hydrodynamics and coupled dynamics
- Hydromechanics of offshore renewable energy devices
- Conceptual design of floating support structures
- Multi-use/multi-purpose offshore platform
Risk and reliability
- Cyber-physical systems for critical wind farm sub-systems
- Multi-disciplinary risk assessment of wind energy projects
- Condition-based maintenance strategies
These 5 EPSRC-funded studentships are open to UK and eligible EU citizens (with Settlement status) with a first class, or strong upper second class, honours degree in Mechanical/Civil/Materials/Structural Engineering. Additional EngD studentships, funded by industry, might be available for strong international candidates.
For informal enquiries, please contact the departmental administrator Lynn O’Brien (lynn.o-brien@strath.ac.uk) with “WAMSS Studentships” in the email subject, who will put you in touch with the lead academics in the research area of your interest and advise you on the formal application process.
The deadline for the receipt of applications is May 10, 2022.
