Professor Moataz Attallah holds a chair in advanced materials processing at the School of Metallurgy and Materials University of Birmingham. His research focuses on developing a metallurgical understanding of the material-process interaction in additive manufacturing of metallic materials focusing on the process impact on the microstructure and structural integrity development. His research is conducted through research partnerships with various companies in the aerospace, defence, medical, space, and nuclear energy sectors. He co-authored over 130 journal and conference papers, three book chapters, and is a co-inventor on eight patent applications.
Dr. William Kyffin is the head of welding and materials at the Nuclear AMRC, which is part of the University of Sheffield. Dr Kyffin is responsible for the welding and joining activities within the Nuclear AMRC, which includes a wide range of technologies from arc based processes, laser beam welding, electron beam welding, bulk additive manufacture and hot isostatic pressing. Dr Kyffin’ s background is as a metallurgist having gained his PhD from Sheffield University studying the use of phosphorus based inoculants for refining Al-Si alloys. He then spent five years in industry as a product metallurgist responsible for wrought Inconel quality alloys. Subsequently, he moved to TWI, and spent 10 years developing solid state joining techniques based upon friction stir welding and linear friction welding. Dr Kyffin has spent the last 10 years at the Nuclear AMRC working within the welding group. One of the main areas of research focus has been the development of Powder Metallurgy (PM) Hot Isostatic Pressing (HIP) for nuclear applications.
