The following vacancy at the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Sheffield is currently being advertised.
Sheffield University and the UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) have established a strategic partnership to address some of the key engineering challenges to make fusion power a reality. To support this endeavour, the university is making a number of collaborative research appointments including two chair positions: a UKAEA Chair in Qualification for Fusion and a UKAEA Chair in Fusion Materials.
The UKAEA Chair in Qualification for Fusion will address fundamental challenges on how we qualify components, fabricated assemblies and systems to be used in fusion machines encompassing: design assessment, quality assurance in manufacture and testing, commissioning and operations. The university is looking for someone who has a clear vision for their research, who is establishing or has established a strong international reputation in their field and who can contribute to the department/University in a leadership role. The Chair will establish a world-leading research programme in engineering qualification, encompassing data-centric approaches. Of particular interest are researchers active in verification, validation and calibration for models of systems with complex physical processes; for which data are scarce and expensive to obtain, and where quantification of uncertainty is a key consideration. This expertise could draw on state of the art techniques in engineering qualification from a broad range of industries including Oil & Gas, Offshore Wind, Aerospace, Nuclear and Space, and apply these techniques to fusion challenges.
The Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Sheffield was established in 1917 and over the past century, it has gained a strong international reputation for its research and teaching. It is one of the UK’s leading departments of Mechanical Engineering: ranked among the UK’s top five Mechanical Engineering departments for research excellence and student satisfaction is consistently high.
The university’s Total Reward Package includes a competitive salary, a generous Pension Scheme and annual leave entitlement, as well as access to a range of learning and development courses to support your personal and professional development.
