Career Opportunity: UKAEA Chair (Fusion Materials), University of Sheffield

Sheffield University are seeking to appoint a chair of international renown to provide academic leadership in Fusion Materials.

The University and the UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) have established a strategic partnership to address some of the key engineering challenges to make fusion power a reality. To support this endeavour, the University is making a number of collaborative research appointments including two chair positions: a UKAEA Chair in Fusion Materials and a UKAEA Chair in Qualification for Fusion.

The UKAEA Chair in Fusion Materials will focus on innovation in materials design and processing to improve and tailor performance, reduce operation failures and understand the recycling and decommissioning of new materials in fusion applications. The employer is seeking a senior colleague who has a clear vision for their research, who is establishing or has established a strong international reputation in their field and who can contribute to the department/University in a leadership role. The Chair will establish a world leading research programme in fusion materials which could encompass areas including process innovation (eg, casting, thermomechanical processing, hot isostatic pressing, field assisted sintering) and the development of new controlled material microstructures (eg, steels,  graded materials, high entropy alloys, coatings), with access to world-class Royce facilities housed in the Harry Brearley Building

The department is a recognised leader in the fundamental scientific exploration of materials which underpin sustainable engineering solutions that positively benefit our planet. As a professor here, you would be joining one of the top Materials Departments in the country: ranked first in the UK for Research Environment (REF 2021), first in the UK for Student Satisfaction (NSS 2022), top five in the country for best university for Materials (Guardian League Tables, 2022) and consistently one of the top in the Russell Group of UK Universities for graduate prospects for materials.

The university’s Total Reward Package includes a competitive salary, a generous Pension Scheme and annual leave entitlement, as well as access to a range of learning and development courses to support your personal and professional development.
