Beyond Code Safety Requirements

Workshop

Beyond Code Safety Requirements

BAWA, Bristol, UK

April 10, 2019

For the highest reliability nuclear pressure systems, there is a need to impose additional requirements to those of the design codes. Such requirements include inspection qualification, repeat inspections, checks on material composition, mechanical properties testing, fracture mechanics assessments and increased design margins. The workshop/seminar will focus on how these requirements are understood and implemented.

The safety implications and costs of the requirements are significant and the requirements are more open to interpretation than code compliance. The event is structured around the main disciplines concerned:

  • Materials, covering materials testing, welding and manufacturing control
  • Inspection, covering non-destructive examination (NDE) and inspection qualification
  • Stress analysis and fracture mechanics

The objectives are to: develop a consistent understanding of the requirements; identify areas of good practice and areas where the advice and/or interpretation of beyond code safety requirements could be improved.

The workshop/seminar will contain input from senior ONR experts and senior experts from nuclear licensee organisations including Horizon, CGN (China), EDF, and Rolls-Royce.
