ESIA17–ISSI2023

Conference

ESIA17–ISSI2023

The Lowry, Salford, Manchester, UK

May 23–25, 2023

ESIA17–ISSI2023 will provide a unique opportunity for the engineering structural integrity (ESI) community to learn about novel solutions and technical advances to some of the most urgent challenges facing engineering today, and to network with leaders in ESI from around the world. Each of the three days will commence with a series of plenary presentations by internationally recognised speakers, drawn from the industry, business and academic communities. Oral and poster presentations will allow sufficient time for follow-up discussions, friendly debate, and the exchange of views and information. A conference dinner will be held at The Lowry on the evening of May 24 for all attendees. Dr John Roberts, Jacobs/Royal Academy of Engineering, and Professor Shan-Tung Tu, Chair, CSIC China, have been confirmed as speakers.

Welcome to the conference

On behalf of the ESIA17–ISSI2023 Conference Organising Committee, I am very pleased to invite all speakers and attendees to explore this website and welcome you to the conference.

Since 2001 FESI has been organising the biennial ESIA Conference Series, initially in Cambridge, latterly in Manchester. The goal of this conference series is to provide a platform for the presentation, review, and discussion on the latest developments in key structural integrity issues for engineering components, covering both existing and future infrastructure. After the International Symposium on Structural Integrity (ISSI2010) was held at East China University of Science and Technology, FESI began organising a joint conference series every four years with the China Structural Integrity Consortium (CSIC).

FESI’s flagship 17th International Engineering Structural Integrity Assessment Conference (ESIA17) will be held across three days through May 23–25, 2023, in conjunction with ISSI2023. Please follow this link for the ESIA17–ISSI2023 conference flyer. Our chosen venue is The Lowry, which is situated in the heart of Greater Manchester’s dynamic new waterfront development MediaCityUK, Salford. An international hub for innovation and technology, the complex is named after the iconic Manchester-born artist LS Lowry (1887–1976).

On a personal note, I first attended ESIA11 in Manchester, May 24–25, 2011, as a PhD student. I won the Keith Miller Award for the best paper presentation and have made lasting friendships with many research collaborators both within the UK and from around the world.

ESIA17–ISSI2023 will focus on knowledge advances across the spectrum of inspection, monitoring, materials science, mechanical engineering, manufacturing, nuclear, hydrogen, big data and digital twin to name a few, but centred on the area of structural integrity to enable a Safe Net Zero. It provides a unique opportunity for the structural integrity community to learn about novel problems and solutions as well as technical advances to some of the most urgent challenges that engineers are facing with today, and to network with people from diverse backgrounds.

Looking forward to seeing you all at Manchester!

Committee Members: John Sharples (Jacobs), Peter Flewitt (University of Bristol), Jack Beswick (Jacobs), Pat Liddicott (Sellafield Ltd), Sue Lowe (FESI Office), and Jian-feng Wen (East China University of Science and Technology and CSIC). A special thank you is given to Brian Daniels (Jacobs) and Elisabeth Le May (FESI Office) for their tremendous support in organising this conference.
