Career Opportunity: Assistant Professor (Research), Coventry University

The following job vacancy at the Manufacturing and Materials Centre, Research Institute for Clean Growth and Future Mobility at Coventry University is currently advertised.

The Structural Integrity and NDE research group is a part of the Manufacturing and Materials Centre in the Research Institute for Clean Growth and Future Mobility. Our research focuses on safety-critical applications and the fundamental scientific knowledge required to assure and improve safety. We work on novel design concepts, characterization of materials properties, development of novel analytical and processing techniques and fundamental mechanistic understanding for improvement in product lifetime, primarily for the aerospace and nuclear sectors. By understanding in-service material behaviour, we support our industrial partners in producing superior and more cost-effective products with longer lifespans.

This role will support the wider work of the team in development of technologies for assurance of structural integrity in safety-critical applications, particularly in the nuclear power and aerospace sectors. You will have a track record of high-quality publications in a relevant field, as well as evidence that you are able to secure external funding to support your research. Previous experience of PhD supervision and management of a research team is desirable.

You should have a PhD in Materials Science, Materials Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering, with relevant post-doctoral experience in Materials Engineering, Structural Integrity, or non-destructive evaluation and testing (NDE&T). You will be able to contribute to current and future research in NDE for predicting embrittlement in Reactor Pressure Vessels at Nuclear Power Plants, as well as broader research in nuclear safety through the application of computational modelling, and machine learning techniques.

Experience and expertise should be relevant to perform existing projects that are externally funded and the planned continuation of these projects with a focus on structural integrity and NDE. The person is also expected to develop funding applications in the nuclear energy and transportation sectors.
