ONR Expectations for Structural Integrity of Highest Reliability Plant in the Light of Recent Developments

BAWA, Bristol, UK

March 16, 2027

Background

Recent developments affecting the UK nuclear industry include the 2025 nuclear regulatory review by John Fingleton CBE and the UK Government policy statement that accepted the recommendations of the review. Also, the mix of designs that the ONR is considering has changed; before 2024, the generic design assessments (GDAs) were all of light water reactors (LWRs), predominantly designed to produce gigawatts of electricity, whereas more recent entrants cover a wider range of technologies including small modular reactors (SMRs), reactors with novel passive safety systems, liquid metal-cooled reactors, and high temperature gas-cooled reactors (HTGRs). To address these developments, ONR has undertaken reviews of its guidance (SAPs and TAGs).

This workshop, organised by FESI and the Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) and being held between 9:30 and 16:30 on March 16, 2027 in Bristol, will focus on the findings of the reviews for ONR guidance on structural integrity, including its applicability to the range of designs that are being taken forwards for deployment in the UK.

The objectives of the workshop are to develop a consistent understanding of the expectations; identify areas of good practice and areas where the advice and/or its interpretation could be improved.

Who should attend?

This workshop will be of interest within the nuclear industry to regulators, licensees of operating plant and new build, requesting parties and to organisations providing technical advice and support to regulators and licensees.
